Cannabis As a Superfood

Jul 29, 2021 | Cannabis Science

Are you always looking for ways to add more healthy foods to your diet? If so, you probably never considered cannabis as a superfood.

This isn’t to say that cannabis could be considered a superfood if you’re simply smoking it, vaping it, or consuming it by way of gummies or chocolate.

There are times, however, when it’s easy to forget that cannabis is a plant and, as such, has many of the qualities that could deem it a superfood.

So What is a Superfood?

The ‘super’ in superfoods indicates that these foods play a role in maintaining a healthy and well-balanced diet. Generally speaking, superfoods are those that are highly nutritious and are a valuable source of vitamins and minerals.

Some examples of superfoods include:

Berries

Along with being packed with a variety of vitamins, berries are loaded with antioxidants to counteract free radicals. They are also a good source of fiber and antioxidants.

Tomatoes

Phytonutrients are those found in plants known to be beneficial to human health. Tomatoes are chock full of lycopene – one of those nutrients. They are also a great source of vitamin C.

Whole Grains

Eating a diet rich in whole grains such as oats, millet, farro, barley, and brown rice deliver fiber, B vitamins, minerals, and other phytonutrients.

Beans, Nuts, Seeds

Beans, nuts, and seeds are all good sources of plant-based protein. Beans have an extra kick with fiber and folate. Meanwhile, nuts and seeds are rich in healthy, monounsaturated fats.

Leafy Greens and Cruciferous Veggies

Getting a daily dose of spinach, chard, or other leafy green provides vitamins A and C, calcium, and a significant amount of beneficial phytonutrients. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and kale offer all of these same benefits and are also high in fiber.

Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list. There are many other foods on the list including olive oil, fish, and natural yogurt.

So Then What About Cannabis As a Superfood?

If we go by the definition of a superfood as one that maintains health, cannabis is a shining candidate to be considered a superfood.

Among its many benefits, cannabis is used in treating illnesses such as glaucoma and cancer. It can ease the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, epilepsy, and other ailments. In addition, it can be a tool in treating stress, depression, anxiety, and even PTSD.

And many consumers swear by its ability as a sleep aid or as a means to increase appetite. So it can clearly offer benefits to a wide range of people dealing with a vast array of illnesses.

We’re not suggesting, however, that a pre-rolled a day keeps the doctor away (even if it does). In terms of its designation as a superfood, we’ll take a look at two parts of the plant in particular.

1. Seeds

As mentioned above, many different kinds of seeds are considered superfoods. In terms of cannabis seeds, the most common type available for consumption is hemp seeds.

While hemp seeds are relatively bereft of cannabinoids, they are an amazing source of essential fatty acids including omega-3 and omega-6. They’re high in protein and loaded with fiber, calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and vitamins B1, B3, B6, C, and E.

And as one of the only plant-based sources of all nine essential amino acids, they make a great addition to salads, oatmeal, or smoothies. You can also use hempseed oil in your cooking.

2. Leaves

Cannabis leaves should be on the above list of healthy leafy greens.

The problem is, unless you grow your own, you’re not likely to come across them. Most producers – be it an individual or a state-of-the-art grow house – discard the fan leaves because they contain little to no THC or CBD. This could change over time though.

Similar to the seeds that helped create them, cannabis leaves are packed with all sorts of healthy vitamins and nutrients such as fiber, calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and vitamins C and K. They also contain flavonoids and terpenes that offer substantial health benefits.

While cannabis leaves have a strong flavor that isn’t immediately inviting, you can develop an acquired taste by introducing them into salads or putting them in smoothies. Their multiple benefits make the effort worthwhile.
